The Tree of Life

A beautiful tree stands in front of a building. For some people, it goes unnoticed. To others, they pause, take in the vibrant colors of the autumn leaves, the earthy scent, its strength, and savor the moment. The tree is neutral. It does not desperately try to get our attention, yet it appreciates being seen. The tree is quietly content when we are able to receive what it has to offer— peace, healing, shelter, or whatever we need. It does not need a photo opp or publicity. Instead, the tree seems to say, “Stay as long as you like. Let this feeling sink deep into your heart, your nervous system, and your cells. Carry it with you.”
There’s a belief in shamanism that everything is alive with consciousness—humans, animals, plants, rocks, mountains, and the elements. Anything that has energy interacts with the resonance of energy that is present. This is how the universe speaks to us. Without using words, they convey their wisdom, beauty, love, and messages.
How frequently do we take the time to notice and value the mystery, magic, and wonder of life surrounding us? We often hurry from one place to another, focusing on our destination or lost in our thoughts. We're too busy talking or fixated on our phones. We've developed a dependence on stimulation, continually seeking to keep ourselves stirred or provoked. Our earbuds add to our increasing distraction, unable to notice the cheerful chirping of birds or the rustling leaves in the branches. We drift further from our connection to ourselves, each other, and nature. Silence feels dull, restless, and uncomfortable.
Ask yourself: What gently invites your presence, instead of what grabs your attention? What can you hear that is subtle, not what is the loudest? What has gone unnoticed that wants to be seen?
Spend time being with nature, and treat it like a friend. Bring nature into your day, even if it is just for a few minutes. There's much to gain when we open up our senses.
