Dia de los Muertos: Celebrating with Spirits

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant celebration that takes place on November 1st and 2nd. This Mexican holiday honors our departed loved ones, inviting their spirits back to visit in a festive atmosphere. Rich with tradition, it's a feast for the eyes with elaborate altars, bright marigolds, La Catrina parade, lively dances, and special sweets. As a medium with a strong connection to Mexico, I love the uplifting energy and the joyful togetherness this festival brings.

Although grief is a very difficult part of death, it is also meant to remind us how precious life is: our own life, the life of others, and life as a whole. It gives pause to review our human journey and quality of life. Whether the deceased is someone we knew well or not, what is the message they leave with us?

Messages from the Spirit World

Recently, I attended a Demonstration of Mediumship where a passed acquaintance came through. Even though I had only met this person twice in my life, his message touched my heart. The medium stated, “This person applauds you in your interest and curiosity in learning. You’ve gained a lot of insight from that. You feed your curiosity and can then share your wisdom with others.”

During the same event, the identity of another spirit and their message closely matched the description of a friend who unexpectedly passed away last month. Although the medium connected this spirit to another member of the audience, I still took this message 'secondhand.' The medium shared, “This person had many struggles in life and found it difficult to cope. She sees you as someone who has their sh*t together.”

What an interesting observation. In the bigger picture of things, I do have my sh*t together but hadn't acknowledged it for myself. Certainly there have been times in my life when I didn't have my sh*t together. And sh*t happens. I hope to always have the strength, resources, and love for myself to pull through during challenging parts of my journey.

On a different scale, history makers such as Jane Goodall also have a message. A shaman in her own way, she served to protect our environment. Goodall taught us how to treat our planet with more care and compassion. Can we choose more sustainable ways to maintain a better home for us all— people, animals, plants, and our natural resources? My own recommendation is to buy a trash picker and a bucket. Pick up trash in your neighborhood, at the park, beach, or any place a few times a week. For me, what started off as a simple gesture to help Mother Earth has circled back with countless goodness.

Messages from the spirit world offer wisdom and encouragement as we continue our journey of growth and understanding. Dia de los Muertos is a meaningful celebration of life, love, and the enduring connections with those who have passed.
